Fast and Twisty Roads

Find a great road ... and DRIVE!

The Fast and Twisty search engine can help you find amazing roads near you. If you're not seeing a road you know and love, why not add it to the database?

Bald Peak Road
Bald Peak Road from NE Hillsboro Highway to Bald Peak Park is one of the better roads near Portland. Great twists both up- and downhill combined with long straight sections and some amazing views of the valley make this a great (albeit popular) drive.

Oregon Highway 242
This is possibly one of the best roads in the entire state! If I had one complaint it would be very slow moving traffic with sight-seers but you cannot really blame them. Make sure, if you live in Oregon, you drive this road at least once a year!

Cascade Lakes Highway, Southern Portion
The Southern half of the Cascade Lakes Highway, from National Forest Road 40 to Highway 58. This is the prettier portion and has more scenery and fewer cars. Best part is the big 90 MPH sweepers left and right coming into the Devil's Lake area heading South and, if you turn around at Highway 58, the long straights with views of Bachelor and the Three Sisters heading back North.

National Forest Road 40
Great road with little or no traffic and lots of long straightaways. Watch for animals, fisherman, and as the day progresses, bikers. Bumpy in places but overall good and clear of debris.

South Century Drive
While more heavily trafficked than the Forest Service roads, Century Drive in the summertime is a delight in either direction. Well maintained, wide, and fast in places, this road offers some of the longest, most visible straights in this portion of the state. Road is more or less perfect.

Paulina Lake Road
Paulina Lake Road has tremendous potential but is often busy with campers, fisherman, and general slow-movers which, given the lack of passing lanes, can make "Fast and Twisty" just, well, twisty. If you're lucky enough to not have traffic you're in for a real treat --- dozens of hard lefts and rights and big sweepers wind you up (or down) the mountain on the way to the lakes. If you don't want to pay you can turn around at the scenic outlook, have a nice look at the Three Sisters, and head back down.

Scapoose-Vernonia Highway
The Scapoose-Vernonia Highway is one of the best "fast and twisty" roads near Portland by my measure. Somewhat populated and depending on the time of day busy (and potentially busy with log trucks) this road has a great combination of tight curves, big sweepers, and long straightaways that we all look for. Good in most places. Watch your speed on the downhill sections in either direction.

Antelope Valley Highway (Oregon 218)
Possibly one of the singular best roads in the state of Oregon, hands down. I say "possibly" because there is a stretch that is under construction and has gravel and some oil on the road, at least there was in August 2013 when I drove it, but once that is cleared this is a 5+ star road. No traffic, epic views, amazing sweepers and very, very tight and technical twisties combined with the sheer length of the drive make for a truly Fast and Twisty road!

Timber Road
Timber road is amazing for twists and turns and is very accessible from Portland. Only major issue with the road is that it is very inconsistent conditions-wise. At speed this is an advantage, especially if you have a good suspension, but watch out for the occasional bump that will cause you to lose traction.

NW Germantown Road
A very twisty road that carves through Forest Park. This road has roughly 750 feet of elevation change, with plenty of it occurring in the numerous very tight turns. Slower moving traffic can be expected on this road and there are no passing opportunities at all, in addition to this road being popular for cyclists. For these reasons, this road is best enjoyed during hours where there is minimal traffic. Fair pavement condition, could use a fresh layer of sealant. 4 stars for length, and high probability of cyclists and other traffic.

Hurlburt to Gordon Creek to Bull Run
Fun roads close to Portland driven as part of the August 2013 Porsche Club "Arrive and Drive" event. Great twisties in here but on weekends you're going to also run into a fair amount of traffic in places. Road conditions are mostly good but there are rocks on the road in some places --- especially in the tight turns --- so watch out for that.

Washougal River Road
The Washougal River Road is one of the great accessible roads near Portland. Better to drive it on a weekday morning if you can since on hot, summer weekends the road is littered with folks parking to enjoy the river. Be sure to go past Salmon Falls Road --- your return to Highway 14 if you need to get back more quickly --- and go to the end of the road to see some truly beautiful scenery (and appreciate a bunch more twists.) There is some rough road out there but it is not that bad and it is well marked.

SW Kruger road
Kruger road winds through the hills to the west of Sherwood, along rolling hills and through beautiful forested areas. This road has an excellent blend of S-curves, gentle sweepers, and very tight turns. Traffic is not usually encountered in my experience. The road surface is in good overall condition, however there was one spot where there was a bit of uncleared gravel in the road, that is the only thing holding this road from being 5 stars in my eyes.

NE Mountain Top Road
This is newly paved as of June 2013 and has a lot of potential. Very short, but very fast with a few nice blind hills. Recently paved with some gravel in places.

Skyline Blvd. (East leg)
Significant elevation change, no decreasing radius turns. Traffic usually present. Fair pavement condition for a road that sees traffic on a regular basis, no potholes or other rough areas.

Logie Trail Road
Logie Trail Road is one of the most technical roads anywhere close to Portland in my book. The road is uneven, full of blind turns and full uphill 180s ... in short you have to be crazy to try and do this one at speed --- which makes it so fun! I strongly recommend only approaching it uphill --- downhill would be dangerous --- and always watch out for bikers! Three stars due to the general condition of the road ...

Historic Columbia River Highway
The Historic Columbia River Highway between Troutdale and Rooster Rock State Park parallels the 84 Expressway. This road has a ton of potential but unfortunately is an incredibly popular road owing to the waterfalls and other scenic views and so doesn't quite deliver. Try it on a weekday morning and you will likely have less traffic --- but always watch out for bikers and hikers and keep your speed down if possible.

SW 175th Ave.
This road provides both a quick and fun route between central Beaverton/Aloha and Scholls Ferry/Roy Rogers road. This road runs over Cooper Mountain on the southern edge of Beaverton. There is about a 500 foot elevation change, and one tight corner on the southern approach. The flat portions atop the mountain have rolling hill crests, and a 4-way stop. The northern/Beaverton side of the hill is a very steep and long grade, so use of engine braking would be advisable.  The road surface is in okay shape overall. There are some cracks in the asphalt in some places, but not on the driving line. The same goes for a few small potholes, they are very small and passable even for cars with very low ride heights or low profile tires. There are also a few sewage/water line mini-manholes located on the center line on the southern approach, but they are not very large and are largely avoidable.

SW 185th Ave
"This road serves as another alternate route to reach Scholls Ferry road from Aloha/Beaverton. It also connects with other entertaining roads in the Cooper Mountain area. The noteworthy section is from the top of the hill to about half way down. This contains a smooth, constant radius, sweeping and descending turn that can be taken with a considerable amount of speed. There is also a quick s-curve that rolls into a sweeping and descending turn. Traffic may be encountered especially during peak hours. The road surface on the straight section on the bottom of the hill is a bit rough, and has with a few sunken manholes. However, the surface is good from the curves up, with no rough spots that I noticed. 2 stars for short length and rough segment near the bottom.
